- Learning, memory and animal movement in ecology is a field in its infancy, but there are many exciting new developments due to advances in data collection as well as new modelling and computational methods. - Memory and animal movement
- The way animals move across the landscape is motivated by external and internal drivers.Spatial memory, the process of encoding, storing, and recalling the locations of important landmarks,undoubtedly plays an important part in animal movement, but modelling the mechanisms behind these processes represents a difficult and unique mathematical problem. We are developing novel memory-based models to characterize the movement patterns of grizzly bears, polar bears, and other large mammals. Related Publications
- Continuous-time movement models
- Although discrete-time movement models, such as step selection, are popular in ecology, it is often helpful to think of movement as a process described in continuous time. Recently we have developed theory to connect the discrete and continuous time models for animal movement, as well as discrete-time movement models at varying resolution. Related Publications
